Why are we like this?

In Resident Evil 4, Ashley’s father, the president, must not love her. This insane cult of mutants kidnaps her, and the president sends in one guy, Leon, to save her. Leon has no support, just a pistol to start with, and no budget. What kind of fatherly love is that?!

Why is it modern games feel the need to give you a companion who yaps at you constantly? Elden Ring doesn't do that crap, and it sold 30 million copies.
