Processing samples from mid-1990's drift fences built for surveys of potential red-cockaded woodpecker habitat. As such, there are herps, inverts, and some rodents in these samples…but a bat?! #museum #mammalogy #herpetology

We couldn't wait until #SalamanderSaturday to share this photo, so #FrostyFriday it is! Things are officially heating up--breeding season is here! This lovely lady was born two years ago at AF as part of our historic captive breeding effort! #StayFrosty

Mabee they understood the assignment. Mabee's salamanders breed in ponds in late winter to early spring. Eggs hatch in 9-14 days, giving rise to larvae w/ gills that live in the water. By April-May, they change & transition to life on land. 📷: 1. Bobby Altman 2. Kevin Hutcheson

A red-tailed hawk was pursuing a yellow-shafted flicker, and they both just slammed up against my fourth-floor office window. None of my colleagues are around, and I had to tell someone....both flew away seemingly unharmed.

Heed the herd! It's officially #AmbystomaWeek! That's right: a group of salamanders is sometimes referred to as a "herd", and #AmbystomaWeek2024 kicks off today with this slimy selection of Spotted (Ambystoma maculatum) and Marbled (A. opacum) Salamanders!

If you're experiencing anxiety today, consider taking a walk outdoors...maybe hide under some leaves, ultimately return to your natal pond, become fully aquatic

Oh, hell(bender) yeah! In an announcement by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, the eastern hellbender was proposed to be listed as Endangered throughout its entire range - an important designation, especially in light of recent habitat destruction by Hurricane Helene. 📸: © USFWS
