Carlisle Guildhall, originally Redness Hall, is an L-shaped timber-framed building of 1396-1400. Each wing was designed for a different purpose: one purely a commercial development, the other had greater pretensions with a crown-post roof (rare for Cumbria). #VirtualVernacular

Projecting through-stones or slates are often seen on buildings in the Yorkshire Dales binding the inner and outer faces of the wall. But why do they project - to throw off the rain, to show where the through-stones exist, or simply to avoid the need to trim their length?

Rydal Mount and Gardens, home to #WilliamWordsworth and his wife, Mary from 1813 until their deaths in 1850 and 1859. Whilst at Rydal Mount William became Distributor of Stamps for #Westmorland, a position he held until 1842 when he resigned on becoming the #PoetLaureate.
