Oh I *loooove* The Fool Killer — and the films of Servando González, who desperately needs a revival. I wrote a blurb on it ages ago for the SF Chronicle:

I’ve read it. The book is not “much darker”; James Agee and Charles Laughton preserved much of its spirit, beyond explicit language, and their fairy-tale ending is more sinister. I’m not against remakes, but I’m against this kind of annoying presentism.
