If cosmogenesis unfolds dialectically, our noospheric task is to steward its developmental arc by integrating value polarities—self and whole, freedom and fairness—so their tension yields a higher synthesis.

As Whitehead realized, evolution can be understood as growth in the ability to experience intrinsic value. He saw this as evolution’s higher purpose. In Religion in the Making Whitehead wrote, “The purpose of God is the attainment of value in the temporal world.”

By building on the combined philosophy of Teilhard and Whitehead, developmental philosophy is able to see more clearly than ever before how the distinct worldviews that now compete for dominance within our contemporary political milieu actually form a larger cultural ecosystem.
