Press Statement BORNO: CSATF CONDEMNS THE CONVICTION OF SEVEN YOUTHS OVER #ENDBADGOVERNANCE PROTEST We, the Concerned Students Movement (CSM), Nigeria, stand in firm solidarity with the seven young Nigerians unjustly convicted and sentenced in Maiduguri, Borno State,

for participating in the #EndBadGovernance protests. These youths, some as young as 14 years old, have been subjected to a sham trial, convicted on baseless charges and handed outrageous punishments ranging from caning and forced community service to five years in prison.

The charges brought against them, including the claim that they “formed a group named Zanga Zanga on WhatsApp to take up arms against the government,” are not only bizarre but also a shameful fabrication. The convicted youth include: Mohammed Ali, Mohammed Gajimi (alias Bakura)

17 years old, Muhammed Mustapha (alias Gudusu) 14 years old, Muhammed Mustapha (alias Abbas)15 years old, Muhammed Kyari (alias Mome), Muhammed Bukar (alias Awana) and Ibrahim Muhammed (alias Babayo). For us, their conviction is nothing short of a deliberate attempt to silence

dissent, intimidate young people and suppress the voices of those who dare to speak out against injustice, hunger and corruption in Nigeria. It is unreservedly condemnable that children and youth are languishing behind bars for exercising their right to peaceful assembly and

freedom of expression. In direct response, we demand the immediate and unconditional release of these seven youths. The Borno State Government must quash these convictions without delay. Furthermore, the Nigerian authorities must embody constitutional and international

obligations, respecting, protecting, promoting, and fulfilling the fundamental rights of these youths and other citizens. We join and call on well-meaning civil societies, student bodies, human rights defenders and the international community to raise voices against this

A year ago, students at the UNIBADAN protested vehemently against fee hike. The efforts were aborted by High-Chief Aweda, G.C.O.N Opegbemi Matthias Busoye, who aligned with the Professor Kayode Adebowale management regime, to inflate fees, close the school, promote loans, and victimize student activists.

Characters, as 'student leaders', who aligned with the UNIBADAN management to increase fees outrageously. They disregarded all UI'SU resolutions; desecrated the essence of the Union. Connived with the management to shut the university because of anti-fee hike protests.
