To study magnetism, physicists turn to a surprisingly “simple” model called the Ising model. It describes the interactions between a lattice of simple spins. It was solved in 1D by Ernst Ising in his 1924 thesis.

Dimensionality in phase transitions continues to be an interesting topic today in topological quantum materials and layered high-temperature superconductors.
