For the first time since 2021, no Tawny Owl chicks were found in 25 nest boxes monitored by Sussex Barn Owl Group.☹️🦉 A worrying sign, possibly tied to prey shortages. This is being investigated with other groups. Full article here; tinyurl.com/44pakkhk

Starting very soon, probably tomorrow afternoon somewhere in E Hants, W Sussex or Surrey, possibly Oxon or Kent, the 2025 Purple Emperor season - and they could be extremely good this year, & the males even more violent than usual. Don't miss out!

Just spent over an hour creeping up gradually to an intermittent one syllable strange call I didn’t recognise…perhaps an escaped or mega owl I wondered excitedly. Turned out it was this little fella among the newly emerging hurt berries in Winterfold Forest

A pal has been away on a course.. ‘The younger professional Ecologists all knew everything there was to know about BNG, credits, trading etc but couldn't ID a beech tree, not one of them out of 17’.

Footage sent from friends, Two female Sparrowhawks sharing incubation. I have heard of this happening before, I believe this is highly likely to be a female and a mature female daughter from previous years.

Patch rarity today - singing Reed Warbler; scarcer than Cuckoo here ! I average one every five and a half years. Also Marbled Whites flying in the last couple of days, including my garden…third ever

Big flock of Swifts for Cranleigh; at least 40, flying very tight like a bait ball and way up high and out of view. Anyone got an explanation?

🚜All the wrong kind of drama today... Picture this: fields with curlew chicks hiding being cut for silage! Enter Bruce, our cool curlew champion contractor. With a thermal drone, and a crew of fabulous farmers and volunteers, a dashing (sic) rescue was orchestrated. 1/

2025 was a record breeding season for Lesser Spotted Woodpecker nests monitored by our volunteers. None failed & where we were able to check the nest contents the number of chicks fledged was the highest since we started the project in 2015. Full story woodpecker-network.org.uk

Its the poorest year for owls this year, due to lack of food, and I have ringed only a hundred of each of Barn Owls and Kestrels. So a big surprise on the Humber Bank to find 6 Barn Owl and 4 Kestrel chicks in the same nestbox ...and with uneaten prey items too!

The UK longevity record for Barn Owl was 15 years and 7 months. last year I retrapped a male that I had ringed nearly 17 years earlier. However, last night I retrapped a female that had been ringed just over 18 years earlier !

Pleased to ring one of the village swift nests including a parent. The other nests are not accessible, this brood are in a modified internal box which stops them entering the right into church and getting trapped.

Hot weather alert: #SwiftAwarenessWeek - if you see a swift (of any age) on the ground, it needs help as it won’t be able to take off from the ground even if it looks like it’s developed enough to fly. They need expert help so if you find one, tell me so I can connect you to help

It's been a summer of Purple this year on Bookham Common in Surrey. The Purple Emperors have shown well in recent weeks with males regularly coming down to the gound. National Trust South East Butterfly Conservation 🦋 BC Surrey SBIC
