Tariffs protect some at the expense of many others. Trump’s first steel tariffs cost more jobs and production in the manufacturing sector overall than gained in steel production. Tariffs aren’t a recipe for broad gains, but instead broad losses with redistribution to some.

The best argument for the Democrats to have walked out, is that the whole purpose of this is for Trump and the Republicans to troll the Democrats sitting there. Democrats should attend the state of the union. They are not required to attend rallies.
