St Maximilian Kolbe died 80 years ago today in the Nazi death camp Auschwitz. When a prisoner was selected to be starved to death to deter escape attempts, Fr Kolbe volunteered to take his place. He was canonised by St John Paul II in 1982 as a martyr of charity. Pray for us!
