"This is porn's fault" is usually silly but maybe not here, where people apparently consider sex inherently pornographic and so non-romantic and outside the realm of aesthetic expression. Just a depressingly impoverished conception of sex, art, and the human condition on display.

I find it funny how deeply people cling to the label of libertarian when in reality they’re just a republican who hates other republicans.

my two modes are reading about the history of humankind on a Greek beach and contemplating the nature of beauty and existence, but also watching The Office on Netflix whilst gorging on an enormous pizza

There’s this weird insistence, common to many libertarians, on feeling superior to “both sides” of some imagined dichotomy which really just leaves them morally blind to the most obviously different things you could think of.

Glad to see right-wingers coming around on the whole “killing and eating animals is wrong” thing. Very excited for them to look around for who else might be doing that and apply their principles appropriately.

I’ve not rushed to believe this, but between the failed coup, the strongman cult of personality, the dehumanization of minorities, and the calls for the government to round up millions of people, it unfortunately seems like many Trump supporters really would’ve supported Hitler.

Well sex often involves moaning and labored breathing, which, like anything else, can express aesthetic meaning through e.g. body movement/language, staging, lighting, editing, and camera placement. There are boring sex scenes just like there are boring dialogue or action scenes.

How do you know "Free & Equal" isn't the Randians' very own journal? After all, Rand beat Rawls to the punch on affirming our being "free and equal" by 26 years!

Ayn Rand, partly because 1) I started with her least interesting and least compelling work (her non-fiction essays) and 2) I read more of those who influenced her (Aristotle, Nietzsche) and those she influenced (Long, Sciabarra) before returning to her a few years later.

Yes, you're thinking of Roderick Long's "Ayn Rand's Left-Libertarian Legacy" in which he traces two competing strands in her thought: praxeology.net/unblog02-06.ht…
