On this day in 1913: 'The Suffragette' newspaper announced Dr. Lucy Smith as the new doctor for Cork City Gaol, which operated as a female-only prison at the time. She remained as the visiting physician for the gaol hospital here until 1922.

Denny Lane, a renowned Cork revolutionary, spent four months in Cork City Gaol for his part in the Young Ireland Rebellion of 1848.

These magnificent pine trees are an important part of the gaol's history! The governor's garden, where these trees reside, provided a place for the governor and his family to spend time in away from prison life.

Many visitors marvel at the impressive ‘floating’ staircases that can be seen when visiting the gaol. These stairs, built two centuries ago, were ingeniously constructed into the wall, creating a stunning cantilever style. Their craftsmanship is truly awe-inspiring!
