John Jones was North Carolina son of a free AA woman and a white man. He apprenticed as a tailor in Memphis, came to Cook County in 1845 and made their home a stop on the Underground Railroad to help get slaves to freedom (painting by Alfred Jackson Tyler, 1963, IL State Museum)

By the 1860 Census, John Jones was one of the most prominent businessmen in Chicago, steadily acquiring property while taking an active stand against "Black Laws" denying basic rights to Blacks. His work led to bans on Black Laws in Illinois (Alfred Jackson Tyler, 1963)

The Great Chicago Fire led to creation of the Union Fire Proof ticket and need for prominent members to rebuild. Jones owned $100,000 of real estate in Chicago and was a leading voice for the black community. A month after the fire, Jones was elected to the Cook County Board

John Jones would serve on the Cook County Board for two terms. He would retire in 1873 and passed away in 1879. He died as one of Chicago's richest men and is buried in Graceland Cemetery next to his wife, Mary.
