Last chance this weekend to see "Towards a Foreign Land", a special exhibit at Pier 21 that tells the story of immigrants from Yugoslavia in the 1920s. Among many surprises is a map from an old guidebook that shows the Yukon as being in the middle of Quebec and erases PEI!

Holland America's cruise ship MS Volendam is this summer's most regular caller to Halifax at Pier 21. I like her array of traditional rat guards (discs designed to block rats from climbing up mooring lines.) A fun touch: each rat guard has a different design of a cat's face!

On the very spot where military personnel boarded ships bound for Europe stands our Wall of Service. Learn about how it provides a way for families to commemorate service men and women along with the War Brides who came to Canada during and after the war : bit.ly/451Cvft

Canadian photographers & cameramen like Ken Bell, Bill Grant and Gilbert Milne did outstanding work on D-Day Less well-known are some vivid colour shots like this one of followup wave landing on the still-smoking beach. Original at Library & Archives Canada.

The exhibition "Refuge Canada" opens today at the Chilliwack Museum and Archives in BC. It looks at the experiences of refugees and Canada's track record in responding to refugee crises. Packed with powerful features like this replica migrant boat, it runs until Sept. 20.

We had a Canada Day Citizenship Ceremony at Pier 21 this morning. If you ever get a chance to take in one of these, go! They are very moving and fill you with hope for Canada's future.

We have an intern program for new immigrants called “Welcome Home to Canada”. We have an annual employee showcase, a kind of a job fair to introduce participants to potential employers. This year it is on Oct 29. Details about meeting these talented new Canadians are attached.

Today is the United Nation's The International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and its Abolition. The new Pier 21 exhibition "A History Exposed: The Enslavement of Black People in Canada" is a great introduction to this, often-overlooked topic: pier21.ca/a-history-expo…

RMS Queen Mary 2 is in Halifax today. The historic "Doctor's Window" at the Canadian Museum of Immigration at Pier 21, where I work, has a great close-up view of this legendary Cunard liner. Love the rat guards on the mooring lines with paint schemes that matche QM2's hull!
