First shot of the day. Systematic metal detecting by Winchester Archaeology and Anthropology on the battlefield at #Cheriton1644 with Sam Wilson and Will Reid. There's a chill wind blowing towards our position at the Royalist lines.

I was pretty pleased with this find, hopefully some fieldwork to follow!

This was a fun scene to work on! (Note the top notch Armoury department work with the sword close up 😂)

Latest from the Mont St Jean site with Waterloo Uncovered. Six pound cannon ball lodged in rib cage of a horse. In three decades of conflict archaeology l’ve never seen the like. Here being excavated by Sam Wilson, otherwise known as Sam! Scottish Centre - War Studies/Conflict Archaeology

The cannonball has officially been lifted! No musket ball was found near the skull of the horse, indicating that it was not euthanised in the trench like the others - it was likely killed by the cannonball nearby and then dragged into the trench to be buried.
