Cheney always knew he was right.Intellectual, well read, he’d twice flunked out of Yale & had a rap sheet of DWIs. Extremely hawkish, yet he secured 5 ed/family draft deferments to avoid military service. ‘I had other priorities in the 60s,’ he said. He would be HW’s sec of def.

When Ngo Dinh Diem was running for pres of So. Vietnam in October ‘56, he had the support of the US. Diem’s ballots were printed in red, a lucky color in Vietnamese eyes, & those of his opponent in green, a color of misfortune. Diem won with 98% of the pop vote. 😎

My first Indy 500 was in 1976 (age 9) & I’ve been over 40 times since. I don’t follow auto racing at all, but I try not to miss this event on Memorial Day weekend. Not only the greatest spectacle in racing, but a true American tradition. #aintthatamerica

“W coaxed Cheney to be vp. DC declined initially, telling W that a personality test determined his ideal occupation was funeral director. W liked the fact that DC was qualified to be pres, but didn’t seem to actually want the job.”

This is how LBJ treated V-P Humphrey after he had the “audacity” to disagree w. the president’s Vietnam policy at a National Security Council mtg in Feb ‘65. Humphrey had committed the “unforgivable sin”: breaking his pledge of “complete & unswerving loyalty.” From Max Boot ⬇️

Just finished ⬇️ from one of the deans of military history … reading Boot ⬇️ now. Plan on doing a compilation of stories from Vietnam veterans in my hometown in ‘26 & a lecture series in ‘27.

Jann & I want to thank all our veterans today for their service … our dads are gone but not forgotten. Capt. Jack Haskins-WW2 Air-Sea Rescue in Europe (Silver Star/Purple Heart); Neal Gillingham - WW2 Navy medic (Saipan/Okinawa); Army in the Korean War (an Army-Navy guy). 🇺🇸🇺🇸

OTD in 1863, Lincoln traveled to Gettysburg, PA to deliver his famous address. The next day, a Harrisburg newspaper said “it’s best to forget anything the president said at the cemetery & we suspect the world soon will.” One hundred years later they posted a correction.😎

My dog Winston freaks out over a bust of Abraham Lincoln, Ozzy Osbourne’s Crazy Train and harangues from Nazi judge Roland Freisler. 😳

OTD in 1929 French President Clemenceau died. He told a journalist that Germany was his “life hatred” & he allegedly requested to be buried upright, facing Germany, so he could keep watch on France’s neighbor from the grave.

Growing up near StL in the 70s, I can remember my dad getting so frustrated with the football Cards as coach & players would say after every loss “all we have to do is put it together.” Now being a Vikings fan, I know how he felt … gets old when you’re just not any good. #skol

OTD in 1990 self-proclaimed climatologist Iben Browning predicted a major earthquake along the New Madrid fault. Due to the hysteria it generated, some schools closed & residents prepared for a disaster. About 1/2 of my students were in attendance that day … no quake though. 🫨

So far, I’ve worked out every day this year which was one of my New Year’s resolutions … well, full disclosure, to work out MOST days. Always a good feeling to exceed your goals. 💪😂
