For years, whispers have circulated at my alma mater, Alliance Girls High School, about a teacher who allegedly blurred boundaries with his students. Now, after 4 years of reporting - and a legal battle to silence it - this investigation is finally public. africauncensored.substack.com/p/the-teacher-…

THE STORY THEY TRIED TO STOP: A 🧵 1/ In early May 2025, “The Teacher and the System” was almost buried before it ever saw the light of day. Why? Because a man named in the story—Mr. Peter Ayiro— who is central to this piece, moved to court to gag Christine Mungai and

But just before publication, Ayiro rushed to court and filed this lawsuit:

The suit sought both temporary and permanent injunctions to stop us from publishing the story at all — not just online, but in any form: •No print •No digital •No social media •Not even conversation. Essentially: total censorship.

He argued that the publication would cause him irreparable harm and reputational damage. Yet, no complaint had been filed against him by any formal body. Instead, he tried to preemptively erase the testimony of survivors.

@Chris_Mungai , the journalist behind the story, filed a powerful affidavit detailing why this story mattered — not just for the survivors, but for every institution entrusted with children. The affidavit revealed deeply troubling patterns: •Allegations of grooming and sexual

11/ We challenged the injunction: on constitutional grounds (Article 34), in the public interest (because he teaches minors), and because he was given a right of reply. We also flagged the risk of witness intimidation in the delay.

13/ May 26th came. The hearing lasted 3 minutes. The magistrate said she would review all the affidavits and evidence filed. At his lawyers request, she extended the gag order and set a new ruling date: July 4th -- six more weeks of silence.

14/ Today, July 4th, the magistrate ruled in our favour. The injunction is lifted. The court found that our story was not malicious, that it raised issues of serious public interest, and that it had been responsibly reported.

15/ The court said that silencing such stories discourages victims, emboldens impunity, and shields misconduct from scrutiny. “Child protection is not a secondary concern,” the ruling reads. “It is a constitutional imperative.”

16/ This ruling sets a precedent for how abuse involving minors is treated in the media and in court. Of note is that the magistrate said that "the law should not be used as a tool to shield potentially serious misconduct involving children from legitimate public scrutiny."

17/ If you’re a survivor, a former student, or have something to share, we’re still listening. You can write to us confidentially at [email protected]. We still don't know the full extent of this abuse, and so we need every testimony.

That this story came out was a victory in many ways. Here's a summary of Justice Becky Cheloti's ruling dismissing Peter Ayiro's application to prevent the story from being published ( a typical SLAPP suit): 1. While the Plaintiff alleged potential reputational damage, the same
