How were saints made in the Middle Ages? By the late thirteenth century, there were tight checks in place and few made the grade. Between 1198 and 1500 there were only 40 papal canonizations - compare the late Pope John Paul II, who canonized 482 saints! (Rob Bartlett's figures)
