I am so excited to announce that I am a recipient of the 2024 Amer Soc of Crim Ruth D. Peterson Fellowship! It’s an honor to win this award named after Dr. Peterson (who is also a fellow buckeye😁) and that my chair Jennifer Cobbina-Dungy also won as a graduate student!

If the Criminal Legal System is EVER going to change. It is going to need to do so with a Trauma-Informed Lens.

What a person experiences before they commit an offense is important so we know how to help them!!! Incarceration is NOT always the answer.

For my dissertation, I’m asking trans people about their safe spaces. This evening at the end of an interview my participant tells me:

“I hope you realize that you’re creating a safe space for us to share our stories.”

I am so moved by their words. This means SO much to me 😭

I’m also excited to share that my article, ‘Stuck in Limbo: “Freedom” Under the Shadow of a Wrongful Conviction,’ co-authored with Dr. Robert Norris, has just been published in the Virginia Journal of Criminal Law! 👇🏽

My goal was to interview 30 trans people for my dissertation. As of today, I have 44 people signed up to participate. My goal is beyond met. I’m genuinely shocked. My participants and their networks rock!!!

I was also awarded funds through my dept to help move my diss forward! To have my dept & my uni provide financial support means a lot! I come from a background that most people in academia don’t have so it truly means a lot to be valued & acknowledged in these ways for my work.

I’m thrilled to share that the Graduate School at ODU has chosen to fund a portion of my dissertation through the Graduate Award Program this summer. This money will help me finish interviews/transcription & focus on analyzing the data without picking up extra work!
