Today in Parliament I shared the experience of one refugee who was detained at Campsfield House in Kidlington. It is a harrowing account of the realities of immigration detention. Under the govt's plans, thousands of people would be held in these conditions. It is immoral.

Here is my statement in response to the Government's announcement that it will reopen and expand Campsfield House.

Immigration detention is wrong, inhumane, and doesn’t work as revealed by the Tory government’s Shaw review. Considering below was less than two years ago, will the Labour leader of Oxford City Council be writing to the Home Secretary protesting the decision to reopen Campsfield House?

It is particularly concerning to see Labour reiterate their commitment to re-opening Campsfield House. Oxford and Oxfordshire are places of sanctuary migrants and refugees are welcome here. We want no part in the despicable fearmongering and cruelty of this government.

Earlier this month, the far right set fire to hotels housing asylum seekers. Today, the government announced a "major surge" in deportations and promised to re-open detention centres. The government could have stood up to the far right. Instead, it pandered to them.

Along with local residents, I was shocked to find out that the Home Secretary is planning to reopen and expand Campsfield House without consultation. We are left with many questions, which I will take up with the Home Secretary as soon as parliament reconvenes on 2nd September.
