Enslaved Black folks were forced to produce a fabric that could withstand the extreme labor conditions of chattel slavery and whippings as punishment.

Thus making indigo – an ancestral tool they brought with them from the motherland – the South’s blue gold.

Denim was originally called “slave cloth” and was deemed “unfit” by anyone that wasn't enslaved. As slavery shapeshifted, denim was worn by sharecroppers, then factory workers.

Black organizers in the south, particularly the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, wore denim to signal class solidarity with Black workers while organizing them to vote. (The SNCC Legacy Project)

The SNCC Legacy Project Black activists turned denim into a radical uniform adopted by many throughout history, including anti-militarism movements and subcultures like punk rock.
