Wow, this is very sad news. Rod Ewing, along with a handful of other mineralogists, essentially invented the field of radioactive waste immobilisation. He leaves an outstanding legacy. โข๏ธ A lovely tribute here from Franรงois Diaz-Maurin - @francoisdm.bsky.social
I had absolutely the BEST time visiting the HZDR @[email protected] labs with Kristina Kvashnina Peter Kaden Natalia Mayordomo Herranz and others. Truly incredible #radiochemistry facilities that I hope to send my students and postdocs to work in soon. So many gloveboxes! ๐ Thank you! โข๏ธ South West Nuclear Hub
And it was great to talk about the speciation of #uranium in natural titanate minerals when I visited HZDR @[email protected] too. Thanks to the incredible HERFD-XANES spectrometer Rossendorf Beamline European Synchrotron, it transpires the U(V) is probably far more prevalent than we think โข๏ธโข๏ธโข๏ธโข๏ธโข๏ธ
How ace it is to be in #Dublin for the fourth European Mineralogical Conference, EMC2! A great chance to catch up with colleagues young, old & new University of Bristol Earth Sciences Manchestergeomicro, as well our mineralogical hero, Mr MineralogicalSociety himself, Kevin Murphy! Can't wait for some great talks.
Huge thanks to the organisers of #emc2 for inviting me to be the keynote speaker at today's session on exotic and ubiquitous #minerals, and for the great questions too. No minerals were harmed in the making of this talk! University of Bristol Earth Sciences South West Nuclear Hub
"When we move to thinking about a new generation of nuclear power, we must think about nuclear waste now". I chat with BBC News (UK) about the UK's radioactive waste & our plans to manage it. A piece weโve been working on for a while: What in the deep bedrock of Earth will the UK do with its nuclear waste - material that remains hazardous to humans for thousands of years. Kate Stephens Prof Claire Corkhill BBC News (UK) bbc.com/news/articles/โฆ
๐จNew paper alert! In this collaboration between South West Nuclear Hub partners University of Bristol Earth Sciences & the Nuclear Futures Institute Bangor University, we explore Zr doping in UO2 nuclear fuel & its effect on radiation properties shorturl.at/1hOhA
In case you missed it, check out this great piece from the BBC News (UK) on radioactive waste disposal in the UK, from decommissioning and storage of waste at Sellafield Ltd, to plans for disposal in a geological facility. I had a lot of fun working on this! youtu.be/4lv5vFiZhpI
What a beautiful day to visit a Magnox reactor โข๏ธ๐ Many thanks to Nuclear Restoration Services #Wylfa for hosting CoRWM and for briefing us on all things decommissioning and radioactive waste management at the site. Diolch yn fawr iawn! Until next time #Wales, you beauty! ๐ด๓ ง๓ ข๓ ท๓ ฌ๓ ณ๓ ฟ
