Late night scoop from 404 Media: the gov will no longer instruct car makers to ignore a landmark car repair law, according to a letter we obtained. Means the overwhelmingly popular right-to-repair law will seemingly finally be allowed to go into effect 404media.co/biden-administ…

New from 404 Media: for months Instagram has bombarded Jason Koebler with ads for weapons, drugs, hacked accounts, fake money. Not only is it an obvious content moderation issue, but Instagram is *profiting* from this underground trade by running the ads 404media.co/instagram-ads-…

New from 404 Media: an AI startup founder was recently in a Forbes 30 Under 30 for their 2D to 3D image conversion company We found at one point it was humans behind the work, sometimes producing work wholecloth without the help of machine learning at all 404media.co/kaedim-ai-star…

I grew up loving technology, and have dedicated my career to covering tech. I'm also a Luddite. Wrote about how that came to be for the The Washington Post, and why you should be a Luddite too washingtonpost.com/opinions/2023/…

It’s pub day for Blood in the Machine, the book I’ve been working on for over five years. It tells the story of a chapter in history too often papered over—how workers rose up at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution when entrepreneurs used machines to take or degrade their jobs.

I wrote the bulk of the book as a narrative in an effort to put the reader in the Luddites’ shoes as they confront a vanishing future; a world that is being privatized, factorized, and commodified, and bent, against their will, to the whims of the tech titans of the day.

Damn. The The New Yorker calls Blood in the Machine "a gripping narrative of political resistance" in a sharp beautifully written review that expands some of the parallels I explore in the book. Thanks, Kyle Chayka newyorker.com/books/page-tur…

New from 404 Media: those food delivery robots that are armed with cameras and driving all over sidewalks in LA? They're providing filmed footage to the LAPD, according to internal emails we got. Food delivery robots just became surveillance devices 404media.co/serve-food-del…

This week Brian Merchant is back to talk with Paris Marx about the real history of the Luddites and why we should be inspired by them. In this clip, Brian explains how the divide on the “machine question” is as relevant today as it was in 1811. Full ep: podcasts.apple.com/podcast/the-re…
