Incredible expedition to southern tip of Chile to explore above & below fungal biodiversity w @giulifungi, Merlin Sheldrake, Cristian Ignacio Moreno Tormo. Explored bogs, steppe & oldgrowth Nothofagus forests in full autumn colors, collecting mushrooms Fungi Foundation & soil SPUN
A great example of the importance of taxon sampling to understand evolutionary transitions & the relevance of the environment & the adaptations of single-cell organisms to the posterior acquisition of #multicellularity. Great work by Charlie Cornwallis Maria Svensson Coelho Karin Rengefors etal
What a stellar team. Its been such a pleasure working w/ Liteboho Maduna, PhD Peter Chatanga & Sebolelo Molete (not shown) to characterize mycorrhizal fungi in ecosystems across Lesotho. These protected wetlands are incredibly difficult to access, so these data are extremely exciting.
Does the acquisition of symbionts lead to higher or lower rates of diversification in insects? Trick question - its's both! nature.com/articles/s4155… Lee Henry Toby Kiers Charlie Cornwallis
New paper alert! Symbionts have allowed insects to colonise novel feeding niches, but how has this influenced diversification? In NatureEcoEvo we show that symbionts are associated with extreme highs and lows of insect diversification. More below: nature.com/articles/s4155…
Scientists often sabotage their writing by trying to 'sound smart'. This happens in grants & papers Stuart West & @QueensOxBiology published a book urging scientists to tell the story of their science as simply as possible. 4 reasons why jargon-free science is the future:
In retrospect, it was an insane idea to characterize 1,850 microbe–insect symbioses across 402 insect families. But last friday, it was published. Heroic effort: Lee Henry Charlie Cornwallis Stuart West Jacintha Ellers Malin Klein Raphaella Jackson v/ 'tpadje nature.com/articles/s4155…

🎉 Delighted to share our most recent study in Evolution Letters: 'Coprophagy rapidly matures juvenile gut microbiota in a precocial bird'. doi.org/10.1093/evlett… with coauthors Hanna Bensch, Anel Engelbrecht, Shalk Cloete & Charlie Cornwallis. 🧵Thread #microbiome #behavior #coprophagy
Wrangling fungi on the world’s most remote island w/ SPUN to understand how mycorrhizae can aid in global restoration efforts Extraordinary reporting by Virginia Gewin in Nature Portfolio. Stellar expedition team: Stuart West Charlie Cornwallis nature.com/immersive/d415…
This was the stuff of childhood dreams. So many thanks to the amazing expedition team Toby Kiers Stuart West and wonderful crew on Palmyra for making it come true spun.earth/expeditions/pa…
Happy to finally get this paper published on the quantitative genetics, evolution and fitness consequences of thermoregulation in the World's largest bird (the Ostrich, Struthio camelus) in Evolution Letters! 1/ academic.oup.com/evlett/article…
