5/ New Skills for Care data show that care workers earn a median average of £9.50 an hour, less than 80% of jobs in the UK. Govt must now prioritise increasing pay in social care – through funding & action to ensure money reaches staff – as part of a wider plan for the workforce.

"The area most starved of resources and most likely to have a big impact is the process of analysis and problem solving. Only good analysis can identify the root causes of poor performance (measured by either headline metrics or financial deficits)."

"The emerging science of what makes for good decision- making prioritises diversity of perspectives above all else. When you have an orthodoxy which isn’t seriously interested in whether it’s right or wrong, you run into problems." Brilliant article. Thank you.

"... quality healthcare... requires strategic, system-wide workforce planning and investment... improving terms and conditions for NHS and social care staff... to make health and social care attractive career options and to be able to recruit and retain more staff at all levels".

Especially significant is the increased length of stay for those aged 85+ from 10.8 days in 2019 to 12.5 days in 2022. Highlights the discharge challenges and the increased pressure caused from the reduction in 'flow'.
