Here is the wonder of the gospel: The triune God saves sinners from Himself, through Himself, by Himself, to Himself, for Himself. - Brett Anthony Baggett

One of the patterns we see in the men in our program is they have developed a pattern of responding to trials and temptations by escaping into idols. When Christ begins to transform them, they respond by turning to him. We call this process worshiping our way out of addiction.

The heart of our program: “And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” 2 Corinthians 3:18

Christ’s instructions on how to deal with worry: 1. Do not be anxious about your life. 2. Look at the birds—God provides for them. 3. Consider the lilies—God clothes them. 4. Seek first the kingdom of God. 5. Trust Him! (Matt. 6:25–34)

Enslaved to sin? He is your deliverer. Anxious about the future? He is your peace. Overwhelmed with suffering? He is your hope. Facing an onslaught of temptation? He is your way of escape. HE is what you need today.

“The written Word of God, rightly wielded by the hand of faith, is the most sufficient weapon for the repelling of Satan and the vanquishing him in all his temptations” William Perkins

Imagine a world of deep pain and suffering, yet no God at work in it bringing about good. That’s a world filled with despair. God, however, is both present and in control of all suffering. These two realities are what sufferers need to hear most. This is reason to hope.

Why is Paul content in his suffering? b/c the desire for a life free of suffering is subservient to a greater desire to bring glory to Christ. He had a deep conviction that to live is Christ and to die is gain. This conviction properly orders desires and brings contentment.

We try to, by exalting Christ in all we do, make our program like a refuge to our men. A safe place they can come, learn, repent, grow, and worship their way out of addiction. “The name of the Lord is a strong the righteous man runs into it and is safe.” - Proverbs 18:10

Had a blast teaching through Ecclesiastes with Mark E. Shaw and others at the annual Addiction Connection Summit. Great organization helping equip the church to counsel addiction!
