The New York & New Haven RR opened 1848, final link in an all-rail inland route via Springfield. Most of the shore line east from New Haven opened 1850s but required ferries at Saybrook & New London; it wasn't until 1889 that the Thames River Bridge made today's route fastest.

That's about 53.5 hours after leaving Boston (including 24 minutes' difference in local mean times), with a total cheapest-class fare of $14 (about $427 adjusting for inflation) excluding the Philadelphia hotel. Today the Acela takes 6.5 to 7 hours and usually costs $200 to $300.

In 1870, only 0.2% of the US was Chinese, but many Western states had significant populations. Idaho was #1 at 29%, followed by Montana and California at 9%. Here's a map of the Chinese % by county. Shoshone, Idaho was #1 at 65%.
