I asked my bud what was up with all the typos in bogus emails offering random people miilions of dollars. It said the typos were an efficient way to weed out smart people who would be more quick to realize they were being scammed. Who knew? #ChattyGPT

The Press Box⁩ Such a fun visit to/satire of tabloid culture in the 1980s. The publisher directs his staff to create circumstances that would justify the use of certain headlines. The title of the book is his dream headline. ⁦Bryan Curtis⁩ Give it a read!

"But it is also time for anyone who cares about homelessness in California to stop misdescribing its primary cause. It’s not mental illness or addiction. It is the state’s highest-in-the-nation poverty rate — poverty caused by the extreme cost of housing." sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/09/05/les…

Any capsule description of California that's more than 50 words long that doesn't acknowledge it is the capital of American poverty is deeply flawed.

One thing that's clear from the online debate over whether the left or the right is more violent is that many people have an encyclopedic command of the attacks perpetrated by the other side, and have memory-holed attacks by their co-ideologists.

The barriers to reversing San Diego fee hikes aren't nearly as strong as many assume. #Prop218 sandiegouniontribune.com/2025/10/10/to-…

This Prince tribute by the Minnesota NBA franchise sets an interesting precedent for other teams closely allied with high-profile musicians. Snoop/Lakers, Drake/Raptors, etc. OK, by "interesting," I meant "morbid."

What Yamamoto did was awesome, but spare me the greatest ever claims. In 1965 and 1967, respectively, Sandy Koufax and Bob Gibson each won three games they started. Koufax gave up 1 run in 24 innings. Gibson gave up 3 runs in 3 complete games. Both > Yamamoto.

We're conditioned to dismiss AI as pastiche. But at least it's honest pastiche. Here, ChatGPT acknowledges the key criticism of the critical legal studies movement -- the legal system & other institutions are about societal control & self-preservation -- also applies to it.

UCSD: "Between 2020 and 2025, the number of students whose math skills fall below middle-school level increased nearly thirtyfold, reaching roughly one in eight members of the entering cohort." Below middle school. At UCSD. It's somehow worse than I even expected.

This why Bezos is more likely to be the first trillionaire than Elon Musk. Amazon subsidiary that few know about makes more money than Amazon's core business. But Musk could still be first with a huge tech breakthrough on cars or satellites/telecommunications.

This is full of interesting insights into Newsom as a political figure but does not have a word about his record as governor -- even though that is far and away his biggest vulnerability.

At 12:30 PM, I was surprised to see my X algorithm feed had sent me a story on the Chiefs losing an NFL game that I knew was not close to over. I have barely used Grok, but if this is the norm, that is pathetic. How dare Grok toy with the emotions of casual gamblers?

Mickey Kaus⁩ What happens when Trump admin realizes the lefty anthropology establishment decided 15 years ago to stop caring about truth? For a crusade targeting bias in academia, cutting its federal $ would be an easy sell. insidehighered.com/news/2010/11/3…
