⏳Sign up for #DiversiTree webinar on 1st Feb UKTreescapes 🌲🌳 Speakers from James Hutton Institute Uni of Birmingham Bangor University @WoodlandTrust How many species do Scots pine & Sitka support? Can microbial diversity defend against disease? What do managers think about diversity?

Recent #research found differences in the gut bacteria of grey & #redsquirrels. Greater bacterial diversity in greys may enable them to outcompete reds. Greys also have bacteria that digests calcium in #tree bark & could explain destructive #barkstripping. microbiologysociety.org/news/press-rel…

So much adaptive potential in trees to be unlocked if management and disturbance creates space for them to regenerate ♻️ #CCF #ConservationGrazing #GapCreation #NaturalRegeneration #DeerMGMT #GroundPrep #Etc

Quote of the day from @wakehurst_kew ecosystem observatory launch: Trees are such good pollen and nectar sources that we should think of them as ‘sky meadows’! Highlight of the day was the wet woodland plot - see 📸 Thanks Phil Wilkes for inviting @WoodlandTrust

One of the questions the DiversiTree project is asking: How many species use Sitka spruce that we know of? Hint: it’s more than people might think, with lots of caveats, like landscape connectivity, mgmt approach, and old-growth features on trees🌲 UKTreescapes
