Hope some of my former colleagues in Birmingham find time to read this. Being Conservatives we protect the planet, and our the country. And notice that a bold strategic approach to emissions bas led to today being the last day for coal fired power in the UK.

“The priority now is to move away from gas as well, by developing as fast as possible the UK’s huge homegrown renewable energy potential...But this vital green transition must be fair, by protecting workers and benefiting communities.” Tony Bosworth theguardian.com/business/2024/…

Great news! The UK shuts its last #Coal plant today!🎉 Next target: Greece, where lignite used to be the 'national fuel'. The plan is to phase out lignite by 2026, while RES hold an ever increasing share in ⚡️ production.

Today is a historic moment for the UK as the very last coal-powered power station, Ratcliffe-on-Soar, closes. It is the end of an era for coal in our nation's history. (1/4)

Great thread on the history of coal power. Ferranti was was my great-grandfather. He dreamt of an electric age where electricity powered everything as it was cleaner and more efficient. 150yrs of innovation later we have EVs and heat pumps, so time to make it reality!

Two observations on the UK's historic phase-out of coal-fired power: 1. The UK got the order of operations right (unlike 🇩🇪): first priority is to phase out coal (then gas and only then contemplate retiring old nuclear) 2. The UK did this WITHOUT expanding the role of gas in

In 2010, coal made up almost a third of UK power generation. In 2019, when I was Energy Minister, we went for the first ever fortnight without coal. From today, there will be no coal power. Don’t let anyone tell you that the energy transition and net zero won’t be possible.

After 142 years of helping power our country, the coal power station at Ratcliffe-on-Soar has closed & the UK becomes the first major economy to phase out coal power. Future plans include a low carbon energy centre which would create jobs and investment: nottinghampost.com/news/local-new…

The closure of Ratcliffe-on-Soar power station is an historic moment in our energy history. Today we pay tribute to the workers who powered our country, and recognise the critical role they can play in our energy future.

The UK was the first country to open a coal power station 142 years ago, and Ratcliffe-on-Soar has been helping to power our country for over 50 years. Workers can look back with pride, and now attention turns to future plans to transition to a low carbon energy hub.

We went along as the UK’s last coal-fired power plant - Ratcliffe-on-Soar - shut down for good. Tom Clarke has more about the day’s significance here: news.sky.com/story/sombre-s…

'Few experts 40 years ago would have predicted that the shift from fossil fuels would advance at such a pace – and that Ratcliffe’s cooling towers now awaiting demolition would form a last memorial to the late King Coal.' ✍️ Martin Vander Weyer
