People keep talking about the "greatest ever tweet", and so far they're all wrong. There's only one candidate, and it isn't even close.

The absolutely worst part of the onboarding is when you are asked to pick a server, when you still don't have any idea what the consequences of that decision are Start with a server that your friends are on already and that's still open to signups You can move elsewhere later

But the penalty for being wrong is near zero. You can migrate to a different instance and drag all your followers along with you. This is maybe the single coolest feature of Mastodon; lock-in is engineered out. The Masto community needs to do better at getting this message across

RTing once more, with feeling. It really doesn't matter where you start on Mastodon. Find one you're initially comfortable with, and you can move your account, and your followers/ings with you, if you feel the need to change. The tools are built-in.

This is an excellent hypothesis, well supported by facts. I have made made sure it’s in a web page over here x.com/drskyskull/sta… and in the Internet Archive too web.archive.org/web/2022111823…

every developer should work for a nonprofit at some point in their career just so they become amazing at parsing CSVs, because from what I can tell, all nonprofits are just a stack of spreadsheets in a trench coat

Friends: I'm not on here much any more. Find me through Mastodon (social.coop/@chrisjrn), and if you make the jump, make sure you leave your handle in your display name so I can find you there. debirdify.pruvisto.org is a good tool to help find your twitter followers.
