Writing Tip: Assume your readers are at least as smart as you. Your plot twist? They probably saw it coming. Rethink it a hundred times.

Writing Tip: Be a writers' room, plural. Question your ideas. Suggest twists, turns, and lines beyond the obvious. Your first instinct is clichΓ©. Contrary to common advice, don't trust it. Challenge it.

Writing Tip: It's nice to have a bad guy get their comeuppance not from the protagonist, but another, more dangerous bad guy. The poetic justice is delicious...and makes the ultimate bad guy even scarier when the protagonist finally confronts them.

Beta Reading Tip: Subtle Interiority While close POV is great, also find moments to convey character thoughts without saying them directly. Use an expression or silence. This lets readers intuit, building suspense and deeper engagement.

Agree or disagree? "As a writer, it's not your job to worry about people's reactions to your work, it's your job to simply do the best work you can."

Writers, how do you manage cultural appreciation versus appropriation in your stories? What does respectful inspiration look like to you, or should we even make a distinction?

When you get off track with your writing routine or goals, is it usually for hours, days, weeks, months, or years at a time? I must admit, for me, it's been all of the above, but "usually" weeks at a time. 😬

Just finished revising a 14,500-word YA novelette. It cooks. But now, there's nowhere to submit it--no journals, anthologies, or contests. The dreaded "novelette no-man's-land." I'll keep looking. It's a shame there isn't a greater appetite for non-speculative novelettes.
