So much for the inevitable onward march of authoritarian nationalism in Western democracies. The surprise victory of pro-EU moderate Nicursor Dan in Romania, following those of Carney and Albanese, should be celebrated. They are a clear retort to the current Trump-induced chaos.

The scale and audacity of Kyiv’s attack on Russian strategic assets yesterday was breathtaking. Ukrainian special forces and agents seem able to operate at will deep inside Russia. Significantly and surprisingly, this is something Moscow has clearly failed to achieve in Ukraine.

I decided to become a journalist aged fifteen after reading ‘1984’ and being appalled at the thought that governments could rewrite history. Orwell knew the USSR did it. Now China pretends the Tiananmen massacre didn’t happen. It did. I was there, and saw it for myself.

5. The real West needs to establish the goal of the war: The collapse of the kleptocratic, autocratic & imperialist regime of Putin! 6. Because as long as Putin or his ilk rule russia, there will not be peace in Europe. /5

An extraordinary performance by Trump at the G7, playing his usual role as Putin’s spokesman and apologist in chief. Russia was ejected from the G8 for illegally invading a sovereign neighbour, Ukraine. Readmitting Putin could not conceivably be in America’s national interest.

The UK govt should resist any pressure to get involved in attacking Iran, the ultimate aim of which is clearly regime change. Last time we did similar, in Iraq, it was a disaster and did not serve Britain’s interests. These are and will remain firmly centred in Europe (Ukraine).

It’s increasingly clear that Trump isn’t fully committed to NATO’s Article V mutual defence. This has major implications for Western deterrence, at least short term, which no amount of fawning on him by NATO leaders can counter. We must develop fallback defence plans accordingly.

And so it begins. The USG has now broken ranks with Western allies by lifting sanctions on Russian banks, some close to the Kremlin. This despite the fact that Russia’s economy has started to creak and Moscow has recently increased missile and drone attacks on Ukraine. Cui bono?

The latest attempts by Trump’s team to claim the Kremlin didn’t actively support his 2016 campaign are ludicrous. Inter alia, Putin’s comments on the subject at Helsinki in 2018 and the infamous 2016 Veselnitskaya/Don Jnr conversation in Trump Tower clearly prove that they did.

Trump is clearly worried about the Epstein files and so gaslighting with false claims about the Russia investigation. If the ‘Steele Dossier’ was “fake”, why did he fail every time he tried to sue us? And he’s still in breach of the UK High Court costs order awarded against him.

Trump is like a moth to Putin’s flame. By agreeing a summit on US soil and already talking about Ukraine ceding territory to the Russian invader, he’s gifted Putin a victory in advance. And with the uniquely unqualified Witkoff as his negotiator, the Kremlin will be celebrating.

It’s important this week to remember that Putin has violated every bilateral treaty Russia signed with Ukraine since independence in 1992. The Budapest Memo(1994), Friendship(1997) and Border(2003) Treaties all guaranteed Ukrainian territorial integrity but counted for nothing.

In his latest truth social post Trump appears to switched from demanding an immediate ceasefire to accepting Russia’s position there’s a full agreement first. Went to Alaska saying he wouldn’t be happy if there was no ceasefire #TACO

Putin predictably ran rings round Trump in Alaska. Welcomed back on the world stage, he can tighten his autocratic grip in Moscow and boost his position with the Global South, who won’t have to fear US secondary sanctions when trading with Russia. Trump, however, gained nothing.

The only credible security guarantee for Ukraine is NATO membership. Anything less will feel like the 1994 Budapest Memorandum.

Donald Trump should not be given the honour of a state visit whilst he remains in flagrant breach of UK law. In 2023 he brought and lost a spurious case against Orbis in London. He has since ignored High Court orders to pay £680k in costs. Trump has no respect for this country.
