Anyone else think the time commitment of youth sports is out of control right now? I feel like a big part of being a coach nowadays is preventing burnout. Kids are always expected to be “on”. I was lucky to grow up in a generation where sports had seasons without much overlap. I
Coaches are always talking about how many guys they “developed.”🙄 Most overused word in athletics! Great players put in the work to develop themselves! Coaches provide a pathway. Guidance. A plan. A form of accountability. Feedback. But PLAYERS determine THEIR OWN destiny!
Different individual Shooting Drills/Workouts that a 🏀 player can use when they are working out alone. Nothing earth shattering. Just different stuff accumulated over the years. Time and track and compete against yourself.
Couldn’t care less how people workout at the gym. Whatever works for them. But it takes less than nothing in the effort department to wipe down your equipment and put your weights back after use.
Another ball and a hoop player workout. Definitely better w/ a partner, but designed to do if it’s just you, a ball, and a hoop. Track time & makes and compete against yourself. Definitely play 1s with a dribble max at the end if you have a partner.
Basketball Player Development: Barkley Progression Workout. Made famous by Charles Barkley and something any player is capable of doing when a drive is walled up by a defender instead of picking up their dribble. Great workout for small groups.
The amount of the times the Wing Stop Million Dollar Baby commercial plays during NBA games is criminal. And it’s been going on for months. And it doesn’t even make any sense.
If I had to give one piece of advice to someone getting into teaching or coaching, it would be to eliminate negative circles around you as much as you can. Don’t give energy to people that are always complaining or talking about others.
Decision Making: Not all encompassing, but here are some different small sides games
focused on different offensive decision making moments for us. These can/should be adjusted to what you want to work on with your group. Add a transition piece in and focus on build up to 5v5.
🏀 200 Makes Challenge
Can be completed with or without a partner. Try and get 200 makes in 30 minutes or less. Track time and score and compete against yourself. Play 1v1 at the end if you have a partner to 7 with a 3-4 dribble max.
