What direct effects can predators have on trees?? An exciting new paper out from members of my lab show red foxes greatly enhance the growth of spruce trees around their dens through ecosystem engineering! 📸Chloé Warret Rodrigues doi.org/10.1002/ecs2.4…

It's the time of year when hungry polar bears are looking for free meals. "Hunters are being asked to keep animal carcasses and remains away from communities and to use bear-safe meat storage containers" nunatsiaq.com/stories/articl…

Check out our newest paper to find out how seasonality impacted movement tactics and space use in sympatric red and Arctic foxes in the low Arctic tundra. #Movement #ecology onlinelibrary.wiley.com/share/EAXJJKC8… Below a (willing) fox who kindly volunteered to be part of the study ;p

Polar bears are big. This adult male was 1st caught as a 10 month old cub in 2004. Next to him for scale is our pilot Sean Headland: he's new to polar bear research & new to Canada. Our Australian-Canadian pilot is a major asset to our team: he just needs to get used to the cold.

Packing up field gear after a successful field season is always a time of reflection. I could ponder the tracks of this polar bear for a long time & come up with dozens of questions. 40 years studying them already & it's nowhere near enough.

More than 5 years have passed since this paper was published. Exposing how climate change deniers worked to confuse the public about polar bears & sea ice loss was a relief. Media no longer asks about the denier nonsense during interviews. academic.oup.com/bioscience/art…

Saw a polar bear-climate change denier Tweet above average sea ice in Svalbard as if it's good news but issue is that the decline started before 1991 & spring ice melt is >15 days earlier/decade & freeze-up >15 days later/decade. Habitat loss from climate change is the threat.

Check out our new paper: …ementecologyjournal.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.11… Despite a high potential for interference, Churchill Arctic and red foxes coexist quite peacefully, which contrasts with the situation in Fennoscandia. Find out the specifics in Movement Ecology BES Movement Ecology
