With Sherry Wu, Mina Lee, Ken Holstein, Vera Liao, Hari Subramonyom, and Min Kyung Lee, I am organizing a CSCW panel to discuss how LLMs could influence CSCW and social computing research & vice versa. What would you want to ask the panel? forms.gle/QXHMFKwZ3Ug1pe…

Glad I can talk about this now! Thank you Google for this research gift/award for Inclusion Research. Our work will make open source communities more inclusive by shifting the norms of open source communities (think bug reports -> "hug reports") Congratulations Pranav Khadpe!

So I have come to the disheartening conclusion that I am not good at Bayesian thinking. I can compute posteriors as well as anyone, but I don’t find myself using it in decision making as much as I should. Could anyone suggest books/other resources to put it into action?

This paper talks about how managers ask loyal workers to work harder without compensation sciencedirect.com/science/articl…. I tried the same experiment with ChatGPT as a "participant". The result "replicates": chat.openai.com/share/8bb08b22… A cause for joy or for worry?

Just in time for graduate school applications, we created gradschool.chat an experimental LLM-powered assistant to learn about topics of interest to potential advisors, find your fit & "brainstorm" ideas. Would love to hear how you use it, and of course your feedback!

But seriously folks, this a short and juicy tirade in which I say: (0) there will be superhuman AI in the future (1) they will be under our control (2) they will not dominate us nor kill us (3) they will mediate all of our interactions with the digital world (4) hence, they will

This was a fun paper to write. We're questioning the assumption that all AI assistants should primarily interact through unstructured text. Our solution combines cogsci insights into how people explore and LLM approaches to support this sensemaking

So I've been absent here, but a lot of exciting things happening: I took a leave from Emory earlier this year to work with the Google Bard team, helping to create new AI experiences. Bard is now Gemini, and I'm really excited about what we're creating there. More soon :)

Can't wait to present this work at #chi2024! This work built on a 4-year partnership w/ entrepreneurial hub Community Forge - we provide a rich, qualitative account of the overlooked digital skills and supporting tech required for entrepreneurs to derive actual value from genAI

Glad to see Jay’s hard work recognized. His work does a great job of balancing the goals of making the system simple and automated (and thus easier to ship in a product) with allowing users to engage with possible harms in a reflective way.
