Please be careful on the chalk trails which are especially slippery after all the rain. Around Ivinghoe Beacon, Incombe Hole, Pitstone Hill, Bacombe Hill and Whiteleaf Hill that we are aware of. 📷 Ivinghoe Beacon The Ridgeway National Trail

The chalk under our feet determines so much of what grows in the downland, where you could find over 80 species of wild bees, Roman snails, brimstones and chiffchaffs. And other amazing stuff! ℹ️open.substack.com/pub/marytebje/… 📍College Lake BBO Wildlife Trust

For #BlackHistoryMonth, we’re sharing links between Amersham and the history of enslaved people. In 1747, Lord of the Manor, William Drake (1724-96) married the heiress Elizabeth Raworth (1725-1757).

We’d like to congratulate the Icknield Way Association and Friends of the Ridgeway on the successful launch of the new very old #GreatChalkWay that links the Jurassic Coast in Dorset with the Wash in Norfolk. It’ll be a memorable route!

Our beautiful National Trail traverses some impressive countryside. Tucked away in the folds of the South Oxfordshire Chilterns, is the tiny village of just over 1,000 residents. Ewelme, pronounced “Yoo elm” is located north east of the market town of Wallingford. #OxfordshireDay

A feast from the Forest This region is distinctive because of our beechwoods, once used for chair making, charcoal, lumber for London, now still an integral part of our landscape and woodland heritage, a place to escape and breathe. by Micro Travels with Mary  open.substack.com/pub/marytebje/…

This trig pillar marks a height of 216m (708’) along the Trail between Fox Road & The Twist outside Wigginton in Hertfordshire. Confusingly it’s sometimes referred to as being located 70m lower down @Dunsley Farm. Views towards Trails end (or start) @Ivinghoe Beacon are lovely!

It’s not hard to image the bustle of boats & boots, the traders & drovers using these ancient routes spanning Dorset to East Anglia, all converging at this lovely spot; The Ridgeway National Trail Thames Path National Trail & Icknield Way could all easily tempt onto the trail. 🥾open.substack.com/pub/marytebje/…

Despite the imported horrors from across the pond, Halloween is believed to have originated from an ancient Celtic festival of Samhain celebrated on the night of 31 October, the eve of All Saints' Day when ghosts and spirits are abroad. #halloween2024 👻 open.substack.com/pub/marytebje/…

Everyday Amersham Museum #joy is overhearing visitors. Today included 60 primary school children having an excitedly happy time, & a grandmother and grandson having wonderful conversations as they looked at the displays 😊#Museum30
