Paul Mayer from Field Museum asked us to contemplate whether Carl Sandburg managed a biodiversity collection. In his poem Chicago, he speaks of “the toil of piling job on job”. Who felt that one? #SPNHC2019 #plenary #collectionsmatter

When a family loves fossils, amazing things happen! The Pankowski family hunts fossils online and donates them to collections. They find specimens, read the literature to see if it has never been described, and collaborate with scientists. And even use Christmas money! #SPNHC2019

This paleo family does this to further our scientific understanding of #fossil organisms. They start on eBay looking for eye catching specimens. They are currently focusing on insects in amber, which requires them to brush up on entomology. #SPNHC2019

Awesome to hear from inspiring young students Mary and Max Pankowski at #SPNHC2019 who use their babysitting money to search online to buy specimens to donate to museums worldwide. So far they have found more than 20 new species, and even co-authored papers. 👏👏👏

As a fellow curator of a historic collection I can relate to the “weight” of more than a century’s-worth of backcataloging. Paul Mayer of Field Museum has a good method of breaking digitization into smaller chunks. #SPNHC2019 “Take the grade C specimens and bring them up to an A”

Paul Mayer of Field Museum kicking off one of the morning sessions talking about his work over the past decade digitizing the fossil invertebrate collection. Largely a local collection w/ upwards of 2 million specimens. #SPNHC2019

Also a cookie at a Field Museum reception for #spnhc2019 / Tullimonstrum colloquially known as the Tully Monster, is an extinct genus of soft-bodied bilaterian from 300 million years ago. There's a single species, T. gregarium

Seeing the new hyena diorama at the Field Museum brought me to tears. Thank you Emily Graslie 📺🦕🦖 for breathing life into the powerful art of diorama fabrication. It gives me hope for the future of natural history museums. #sciart #diorama #museums
