I’ve wanted this moment for so long - the dream of getting a PhD by the age of 30 has been with me for almost two decades. What made it magical though - more than finally donning the red gown - was to do so in front of my parents- at their alma mater- and my family.

I was afraid this would happen. I'm worried about the chilling effects this would have on freedom of speech and on efforts to promote equity and justice globally. I'm concerned for the next Editor in Chief of eLife - the journal - or other editors/academics who want to speak truth to power.

Reports of intense bombardment in Gaza are extremely distressing. Evacuation of patients is not possible under such circumstances, nor to find safe shelter. The blackout is also making it impossible for ambulances to reach the injured. We are still out of touch with our staff
