I just spend the last two days writing my report cards WITH my students. I asked them about their strengths. I asked them to share a future learning goal. We looked at their body of work and we selected a grade. Together. Why haven't I been doing this my entire career?

A meta-analysis of 64 studies finds that self-explanation (e.g., asking students "Could you explain this to someone else") during instruction has a substantial impact on learning (g~0.55): bit.ly/2BzVZMA ($)

This learning was amazing to witness. Deep learning about identity, demonstrating just how incredibly capable young students are of producing exceptional work.

Respect, I think, always implies imagination-- the ability to see one another, across our inevitable differences, as living souls.

Now this is very interesting, and I don't think at all obvious. Reading challenging texts aloud, and at a fast pace, improved the reading comprehension of all students, but for the lowest achievers, the gains were almost twice as great: bit.ly/2XUMfp0.

Gr. 5 students Meadow Ridge School @fsd38 created pastel and acrylic reproductions of Group of Seven paintings and photographs of National Parks across Canada, for an art gallery they put on for the school community. Art, land, poetry, connection. So proud of them!

One of my favourite tasks this year: each Gr 5 student created an Alberta wetland bird sculpture in style of artist Judith Scott, after we read her captivating life story as part of our study the Caldecott Award contenders. #biodiversity #wetlands #edchat @fsd38 Meadow Ridge School

Students also created a written piece and a watercolour representation of their wetland bird, after researching their bird’s adaptations to survive. Most exciting was when they could identify “their” bird on local wetland field studies! @fsd38 Meadow Ridge School
