98% of NIH grants that should have gone out this month, didn't. Despite court orders 'unfreezing' the funds, they are frozen. Biomedical research will grind to a halt. Clinical trials will end. All for no reason: the total impact on the US budget is miniscule

🧵🧵🧵Today my NSF award “Synthesis and Reactivity of Oxygen-atom Vacancies in Molecular Vanadium Oxide Assemblies” was flagged for being too “woke”. 🧵🧵🧵 commerce.senate.gov/2025/2/cruz-le…

I went through some chemistry projects that got flagged as ‘woke” and it is a complete nonsense! They were flagged for the broader impact and outreach statements. There is nothing woke about creating opportunities in STEM for people from different backgrounds.

20 years ago, as a new PI, I often was the only woman in the room aside from admins. We have made significant progress in allowing women to have successful careers in science. There was /is nothing ‘woke’ about this effort and I believe it benefits science and society.

It's clear that many do not understand what NIH-funded research does to improve health. It's time to revive a study published 10 years ago that provides incredible information about this. link in the comment Every single new drug approved by the FDA from 2010–2016 was built on

Without NIH funds to run research labs at academic institutions, as a country we cannot train PhD students. No physician scientists. No undergraduates get experience in labs. Nothing. Industry does none of these things. Other countries will have to take the lead.

NIH has stopped considering new grant applications, delaying decisions about how to spend millions of dollars. The freeze occurred because the Trump administration has blocked the NIH… npr.org/sections/shots…

For decades, the NIH has had one core function: support health research in the US. Recently, the agency has been doing very little of that, despite orders from multiple federal judges blocking the Trump administration’s freeze on federal funding. theatlantic.com/health/archive…

To everyone in the U.S. standing up for science today, calling for policies that support science, not suppress it: we’re with you! Cutting science doesn’t just harm scientists – it harms society as a whole. #StandUpForScience

Breaking news: Thousands of researchers and their supporters, including recently fired federal workers, have gathered across the U.S. in response to layoffs and funding cuts ordered by the Trump administration. scim.ag/3FlSKvz

My heart goes out to my colleagues Columbia Medicine and Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center who are spending Friday worried about if their cancer research funding has been cut. The researchers whose careers will be destroyed. The sick patients who will die bc their trials are stopped.

Both NIH & NSF have delayed funding for our lab. This makes it hard to pay for essential expenses, including APCs. I requested an APC discount for an article accepted by a nature journal. So far, my request has resulted in 3 months day and no progress towards a discount. 1/2
