Hockey isn’t scripted, so why is hockey practice? Ditch the clean reps. Train with chaos, decisions & game-like reps that stick. Because when the puck drops, it’s the sticky ones that show up. Story from Coach Barry Jones. hubs.la/Q03y-qs-0

Chaos isn’t the problem, it’s the plan. Ecological dynamics gives coaches the tools to develop Hockey IQ, adaptability, and decision-making in every athlete. Design practices that teach the game - not just rehearse it. Story by Coach Barry Jones. hubs.la/Q03y-v4v0

I spent a month in Canada this summer. Hockey is a religion there. And it’s driving parents to new levels of psychopathic behaviour. I learned about a new phenomenon Popping up in the AAA world: “Birthday party skates.” Coaches cannot officially select their AAA squad until

When clubs “identify” kids at 9(usually by size or $) then give those 15 the best resources while the other 150 9yr olds get what’s left, coaches get no support or extra training. Parents don’t know better. There is probably a lot of massive potential left on the table.

Your flow drill isn't pretty because it's perfect and kids can do it without missing, it's malpractice Your cone course isn't elaborate and awesome, it's malpractice Your freely given shots in your 'cool shooting drill' aren't in the name of player development You have 1 job

Even in weightlifting we don’t need a technical, step by step idolised practice approach. A lot technical training is a waste of time, at best it helps really uncoordinated get basic coordination. At worst it interferes with creativity, learning and retention (cos it’s boring

An unscientific EcoD approach to golf: instead of chipping to a target, set two players facing one another & using golf whiffle balls try to chip at one another. 1pt for hitting the other player. Progress to playing w/multiple balls. Adds pressure & fun. My son won’t 🛑.

My everyday principles of PE teaching and coaching: 1. Gamify everything 2. Smallest groups possible for games 3. Confidence comes from competence 4. Video feedback past the beginner stage 5. Comfort is the precursor to positive culture 6. They’ll remember most how you made them

When something happens you want to correct, learning sticks if you can guide them to the answer. “What are some other options” “Is there space we can use” “Who’s the most dangerous guy” “How can we create a great chance” “How can you best support your teammate here”

I completely agree. ⬇️ At the time, I didn’t know why either but differential learning and self organization is the way to go. And it beats the hell out of paying a shot doctor at $200 an hour.

How we speak to our athletes has the potential to open the floodgates of creativity or build a dam where the coach is the only one with the answers!

Are you designing practice with variability, game-relevance & evolving constraints? Let athletes explore, discover & adapt through ‘repetition without repetition.’ Make environments representative, outcomes-focused & player-centered, writes Brian Gillam. hubs.la/Q03CW2zq0
