This is an excellent question! Answer: it's not ash. It's sand that trains drop on tracks to reduce friction btwn steel wheels and track. Reducing friction = less wear-n-tear on equipment and helps reduce breakdowns. We clean up sand as it accumulates & appreciate heads up!
