I would have really struggled financially this year to do my MSc, had I not received a scholarship from the university. Students from low-income backgrounds are being priced out of academia, and increasingly industry jobs that require MSc degrees.
With state schools, the level of a child’s education is determined largely by postcode. They deny so many children a good education because they effectively select students based on their parents’ income.
