Meant to share before- my short interview with ⁦Katie Razzall⁩ on The Media Show last week (about 20 minutes in) about Baby Elsa & advice to young reporters about investigative journalism ⁦Roger Mosey⁩ ⁦plashmar⁩ bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…

A man called Iain Clifford Stamp runs a scam which promises people he'll magically eliminate their mortgage (for a hefty fee). Tomorrow he's up at Southwark Crown Court for a contempt of court hearing. His defence may be the weirdest any UK criminal court has ever seen.

“Be humble, always say what you don’t know, if you don’t understand something, say it. “It’s very important, especially if you go into a new area, that you acknowledge that you done understand something” Advice for budding investigative reporters. Very wise 👏👏

Here's a little thread on media law in England and Wales and what can and can't be reported following a criminal offence allegedly being committed. First up privacy....

Journalists covering major criminal cases try to report as much as they can They are constrained by law on what can/can't be reported It's quite annoying, sometimes It's more annoying when social media decides there's a media cover-up which doesn't actually exist A good thread:

Wow. This is very much one of the issues with anonymity generally (see people being wrongly accused of being the adult John Venables/Robert Thompson), but this is a pretty remarkable situation.

Was there any advance warning given by HMCTS that Gov wifi was going to be offline today? Why should counsel & solicitors be expected to rely on using their own phones' hotspots to access papers and keep cases moving? If maintenance was required why was this not done overnight?

This man describes how he obtained a disclosure order - which in England & Wales would be a Norwich Pharmacal Order (NPO) - against X, which revealed the identity of an anonymous account, which paid £7,500 in a settlement for defamatory remarks. May such X spats continue 🙌

My favourite bit of Lee Anderson MP 's rant against us. Good luck living in a country without journalists. For someone who believes in freedom of speech this is ridiculous, Lee.

Something in criminal law I don’t quite understand: if a jury cannot decide on a verdict, they get discharged. But prosecution can seek a re-trial. Why does hung jury not count as an automatic not guilty verdict? Doesn’t it suggest prosecution has not proven its case?
