Me and some mates did the Bermondsey beer mile yesterday. We’re all standing outside this one bar because we were not allowed inside… why? Because they are only allowed 25 people max in their bar at any one time (that includes staff and security) even though they could fit in

What's more important? Extending housing upwards, or preserving rooves that can't be seen from the street? Unfortunately, Lambeth Council made the decision, so the rooves won. This story is emblematic of our mad planning system + one bonkers cause of the housing crisis A 🧵

Today, I got my job allocation as an incoming doctor. After 9 years studying at Cambridge, a PhD, and scholarships for ranking high up in my cohort, I’ve been placed in Northern Ireland - hours away from any friends or family and one of my lowest choices. #NHS #FY1 #UKFPO

A good example here by Rory Stewart, describing how the relocation of his 'Syria team' of civil servants from London to Glasgow impacted Britain's response to the war in Syria Ancillary objectives set by governments are too often allowed to impede the primary role of departments

I'm also grateful to the current and former Turing staff who spoke to me for this piece. I could see how much emotional effort they'd ploughed into the ATI, only to see it wasted. They deserved much better. You can read the piece in full here: chalmermagne.com/p/how-not-to-b…

I wrote something about our strange national indifference to Rolls-Royce — and what it says about where we place our attention, and why.

I’ve written about why Leeds needs a tram-metro, not a tram. This is something that similar-sized German cities like Hannover have. (Link in thread)

NEW - we’ve had exclusive access to police raids on high street barber shops and mini marts across England. The National Crime Agency (NCA) suspect some are linked to organised crime gangs. The BBC found the majority were staffed by Kurds from Iraq and iran - some working here illegally.

What happens when we just get stuff built, example 1,001: "The council thinks 250,000 journeys will have been made by Easter, against initial expectations of 50,000." bbc.co.uk/news/articles/…

I run a law firm. Last week I spent 5 hours digging into TikTok’s terms of service. What I found absolutely terrified me. Here’s a breakdown of what you’re actually handing over when you install TikTok (with receipts):

What if I told you there was a city that has built a new tramway 🚋 in eight weeks for just £15m/km? 💷 You'd no doubt assume it was in China 🇨🇳, Spain 🇪🇸, or France 🇫🇷 But what if I told you that city is Coventry, right here in good old England? 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿🦁

For Works in Progress, I tell the story of the fight to bring safe milk to America through the opposing efforts of two men. Philanthropist Nathan Straus argued pasteurisation was the answer. Dr Henry Coit thought it was dangerous. Both had lost children to milk-borne diseases. 1/2
