Agree. Foster's Alumni Oxonienses (1880s but reporting college registers from earlier) quite consistently uses "doctor" for father's occupation, and means the status Doctor of Divinity.

Indeed. I'd go for Goldilovelockian chantries, praying for exactly the right volcanic activity to counterbalance global warning precisely.

Yes, but. I believe we tend to agree on what expected values mean. There is an issue, perhaps, when the mathematical construct of a probability measure is used as more than a tool to calculate expected values. That type of issue is generic, rather than special.

"Information explosion" dates back 60 years - "publish or perish" is older. 2025 resolutions for #ScholComms: (1) data science perspective; (2) concentrate on review articles, treat the rest as "grey"; (3) push for data on editorial boards; (4) ask _publishers_ who authors are.

I've just got through the 2025 annual update on @Wikidata for #MeSH (Medical Subject Headings), so properties P486 and P672. Of interest this time round is the addition of 40 terms related to #AI and machine learning: nlm.nih.gov/mesh/Artificia…

Not hard to say, but to justify. #Wikipedia has adopted a small-c conservative content policy, requiring material to pass scrutiny when explicit canons of source criticism are applied. Not perfect, it is yet conscientious. Soundbites and loudmouth talk out, truth to power in.

"Until recently, most publishers were not aware of the possibility that their online materials would be used to train AI." Debatable. But the assumption that, for example, published scientific papers are the IP of the publishers is just wrong. Look at P3931 values on @Wikidata.

I think Elon is unhappy that Wikipedia is not for sale. I hope his campaign to defund us results in lots of donations from people who care about the truth. If Elon wanted to help, he'd be encouraging kind and thoughtful intellectual people he agrees with to engage.
