Hon Jameson Timba is a senior opposition leader in Zimbabwe who has been in custody/detention for almost a week now. Hon Timba was arrested together with 76 CCC activists for simply exercising their rights as provided by the constitution of Zimbabwe.

The constitution of Zimbabwe provides an expanded bill of rights which amongst other things guarantees freedom of association and affiliation . Rights such as the right to vote and support/join a political party of your own choice are also provided by the same bill of rights.

When a society has lost its moral, social and political fabric politicians from the right side appears unreasonable and to a greater extend intollerant. After this it becomes clear ZANU PF has no respect for democracy and multipluralism remains a pipe dream in our lifetime.

SADC ZimSEOM final report noted key findings including the need for the government of Zimbabwe to respect its constitution and open up democratic space in Zimbabwe. This is a serious observation which SADC should prioritise ahead of SADC Summit slated for this August in Harare.

The regime in Harare is back to its original default and panic mode ahead of the SADC summit slatted for this August 2024. These barbaric systemic arrests and attacks targeted at human rights defenders and prodemocratic activists must stop with immediate effect.
