Quite a weekend. Spent some time at a saw whet owl banding station. The pink glow is the presence of the pigment porphyrin under a black light. It’s used to help age owls, with brighter colors indicating a younger individual.

“By the mid 1930s, DNR records show hunters complaining about too many does and drivers complaining about deer zooming across roadways.”

Nearly 100 years later, we find ourselves in a similar position.

As traumatic as this last storm was, it proved that parts of Michigan are having a great acorn production year. These red oak acorns were littered across the forest on today’s hike.
