Rare that we get something this exhaustive and firsthand on an essential game from the '90s - 486 pages, with color images! Essential work. PC Gamer will be publishing a few stories drawn from this book in June.

I can't wait to read this book on SimCity from Chaim! It sounds like a loving tribute to the game, its engineering, its history, and its studio. Chaim's "Earth Primer" app on iOS is one of the most impressive simulation-based learning experiences I've had. Check that out too!

I thought it would be fun to turn the tables and give Will Wright a chance to interview someone else: me (!), about Building SimCity.☺️

Brief book report: BUILDING SIM CITY: How to Put the World in a Machine, by Chaim Gingold, is an exhilarating read. It is one of the best origin stories ever told and the best account I've seen of how innovation actually occurs in computerdom. 🧵

In 1989, a Nintendo bigwig licensed SimCity on the spot by sliding a million dollar check across the table. trib.al/GymE28z

Another SimCity tidbit from my new book, BUILDING SIMCITY! simcitybook.com. 🙏 Jeff Braun for saving and sharing so many wonderful photos, including this one of you, Shigeru Miyamoto, and Will Wright.

How did Cold War nuclear game theory developed at MIT in the 1950s and 1960s ultimately transform video games in the 1980s and 1990s? It’s the story of SimCity, inspired by 📖 “Building SimCity: How to Put the World in a Machine” 🧵

for the Los Angeles Review of Books, I wrote about Chaim Gingold's Building SimCity (a remarkable work of software history!), videogames as an art form, and what happens when Silicon Valley tries to play IRL SimCity…aka the controversial Californian Forever project 🌁🛠️

Our world is defined by emergent properties that can only be explored through simulation, yet the modern era hasn't integrated the deep philosophical challenges this poses: we need multiple approaches; prediction is necessary but insufficient; no one story is enough... (4/n)
